Planning Deets

Date and Time

Day before Mother’s Day – the second Saturday in May, it’s a wonderful spring day and you can give your newly created flower arrangements to your mother the next day! Win-win baby!

Spring Equinox – roughly May 20th, celebrate the official start of spring. Connect yourself with the ebbs and flows of our beautiful home planet.

Early afternoon around 1 PM – Waiting until a bit after lunch simplifies planning and still leaves enough time to walk the runway before sunset

Location

A park or backyard set the scene for perfect spring vibes.

Tip: For a long park event, it’s always a good idea to scope out the bathrooms.

Shopping List

Printable Shopping List

Must Haves

Flowers – try a local shop for a bulk discount/unwanted extras or a grocery store. Arranging for pick up on the day of the event is recommended
Vases – if guests bring their own, they can easily take home their full final arrangements
Scissors – for cutting flowers, a few pairs are ideal

Recommended

Flower arrangement kit – this one includes corsage bracelets, pins, trimmers, and surprisingly handy wires for keeping flowers together or helping a sagging flower back up
Safety pins – these are for boutonnières, if you have a few already that’ll be plenty. If not, you’ll find a use for them!
Bluetooth speaker – jam out during arrangements and strut your stuff to some background music

Go Over the Top

Wedding arch – super affordable and reusable, it really pushed our event to the next level and made it feel like a real runway. Finding a natural arch or runway in a clearing would be gorgeous too. We decorated the arch with two flower garlands
Flower garland – line the runway to give it a true stage presence
Tripod – capture those runway walks with a camera at the end of the stage

Event Plan

{Full Event Tiktok}
Prep – Assemble the arch, add garland, and outline the runway with more garland if necessary.

Layout the flowers in groups with sections of greenery, flowers, and filler.

Start with Drinks and Snacks – Embrace the spring theme.

Wine, mead (made from honey), juice, tea, or lemonade shock the palette with a crisp refreshment. Or try these cocktails and mocktails.

Fruits, nuts, honey, smoothies, or one of these playful snacks.

Construct your Flower Arrangements and Fashion Moments – Think about how you can connect or contrast the two.

Extra flower pedals can be used to fill the runway, tossed out during a walk, or sprinkled in for elegant camera shots!

How it Went

We had so much fun!

Our original plan was to hold the event near the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park. Alas, due to our old pal Karl, we decided to make a last minute move to Alamo Square Park. An excellent adjustment as we ended getting a great spot right in front of the Painted Ladies!

The arch took a little bit of time set up, so keep that in mind on the day of the event. I was so happy with how it turned out. It really set the stage for the event.

We shared a lovely bit of charcuterie as everyone arrived. Don’t forget all the details like napkins, serving plates, and trash bags. It can be quite a reach to pick up items without a plate to pass around!

After that it was finally time to get started on the flower arrangements and fashion moments!

I had a planned to make a pair of flower shoulder decorations from the beginning and I got started right away. The rubber cement I used proved to be quite a mess. Yet, I’m quite happy with how things turned out! It was certainly an experiment!

Everyone else was doing their own moments and there was so much variety! Hats, pins, halos, and so many different creative ideas! It’s always such a fun moment to share creatively with friends.

For the arrangement, I was able to pick up some excellent flowers that were left that matched my fashion moment and they all fell into place. I used some of the wire from the arrangement kit to prevent sag and get it all just right.

With that, we got right to the runway to start the show before dark! It was time to strut our stuff!

We pumped up some runway jams and let ourselves shine on the runway. I’m smiling now remembering it.

Finally, we took a few more couples pictures before packing up.

We met up after to keep chatting and finally called it a night on what was truly a highlight of the summer.
